Solitaire, Sprints, and Self-Love

Let’s get one thing out of the way: the treadmill does not have the best reputation. People love to hate it. It’s often dismissed as boring, repetitive, or something you only use when it’s raining outside and you’re out of excuses.
But I’d like to offer a counterpoint: maybe the treadmill is actually kind of . . . awesome?
Hear me out.
1. Every Run Can Be Different
The treadmill is like a playground for runners. One day, I’m taking it easy with a light jog while watching my favorite show. The next, I’m cranking up the incline and pretending I’m climbing Mount Everest. (Okay, not really, but it feels like it!) You can mix up your pace, switch up the terrain, and just have fun with it.
I swear, no two runs on the treadmill ever feel the same. And that’s what makes it so great — every run can be a little adventure of its own.
2. No Traffic, No Cracks, No Judgment, Just Me and the Belt
Let’s be honest — running outside has its downsides. Uneven sidewalks, weird stares, sketchy intersections. The treadmill offers consistency and control. And best of all? It’s a super low-judgment zone. Everyone’s doing their own thing. You want to sprint? Go for it. You want to power walk while watching reality TV? That’s cool too.
I’ve even seen people playing solitaire on the fancy treadmills at the gym. If that’s not peak “do what you want” energy, I don’t know what is.
3. Built-In Workout Buddies
Running with other people can sometimes be intimidating — trying to match their pace, figuring out where to meet, worrying about slowing someone down. But on treadmills? It's so much easier. You each do your own thing, side by side. You can chat, vibe, or even just silently support each other while running at totally different speeds.
It’s the most low-pressure, high-key fun way to run with a friend. Think of it as parallel play but make it cardio.
4. Accessible for All Runners
Treadmills are incredibly inclusive. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or just trying to move a little more, the ‘mill is there for you. Young, old, fast, slow — it doesn’t matter. You can adjust the pace, incline, and time to fit your level. It’s not about beating anyone else. It’s about showing up for yourself.
And unlike the sometimes intimidating vibe of running outside (especially in groups), treadmill running feels safe, controlled, and welcoming.
5. Your Run, Your Rules
Treadmill running is all about freedom. Put on your playlist, stare into space, daydream, or go full focus mode. There’s no need to plan a route, dodge bikers (especially on campus), or explain to someone why you're breathing like a dragon. It's just you, the belt, and whatever vibe you want that day.
6. It Helped Me Fall in Love With Running Again
This one’s personal.
After my knee surgery, running felt like a distant dream. During physical therapy, I spent a lot of time on the treadmill — not flying through miles, but walking slowly, relearning how to move with confidence. At first, it was hard. I missed feeling strong. I missed feeling fast.
But the treadmill gave me a place to rebuild. No pressure, no judgment, just a soft belt under my feet and a goal: get a little better each day. And slowly, something shifted. I started loving the process. The small wins. The way each run made me feel a little more like myself.
Now, treadmill runs are my favorite. They push me. They ground me. They remind me of how far I’ve come. Every single time I finish a run — whether it’s a short jog or a full workout — I feel proud. I feel strong. I feel like a runner.
So yes, I’m here to say: the treadmill is a vibe. A whole mood. A perfectly valid place to chase goals, clear your head, or just get a little movement in. It’s not a last resort — it’s a legit choice.
Lace up. Press start. Play solitaire, blast your favorite diss tracks, or do 400-meter repeats like a boss. You do you.
Because on the treadmill? That’s exactly the point.
